Sarita, a courageous young girl from a coastal village in Andhra Pradesh, always dreamed of a childhood where education was her priority. She was thriving in class 10 at a local school when her family’s financial struggles led her parents to decide she should be married off, believing it would ease their burdens. Faced with no other choice, Sarita had to leave school and work at home, crafting garlands of basil leaves to support her family.
But then, CRY UK’s project team learned about Sarita’s situation during a field visit and took immediate action. The team, alongside school authorities, engaged in weeks of counseling with her parents, helping them understand the consequences of child marriage and the lifelong benefits of allowing Sarita to continue her education. Their consistent support eventually persuaded Sarita’s parents to call off the marriage and allow their daughter to return to school.
Now back in class 10, 15-year-old Sarita is more determined than ever to complete her education and pursue higher studies. Sarita’s bravery has given her a second chance at life—and her story is now inspiring other young girls in her community to stand up for their right to education.
