Save Local Ugandan from Non Communicable Diseases

Summary:

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, hypertension, asthma, mental health conditions, and syphilis—remain major public health challenges in Uganda. These conditions not only affect individual health but also hinder socioeconomic development due to reduced productivity and premature deaths.

This report summarizes NCD-related activities and outcomes for the quarter from December 2025 to March 2026 in the districts of Kibuku, Budaka, Pallisa, and Butebo in Eastern Uganda.

Planned Activities:

• Conduct six integrated community health outreaches to provide screening services for cancer, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and sickle cell disease in hard-to-reach communities.
• Conduct eight community sensitization outreaches on NCD prevention and control.
• Provide routine NCD screening services at Kagumu Health Centre III.

Achievements:

• 95 individuals screened for diabetes
• 186 individuals screened for hypertension
• 61 adolescent girls and young women screened for breast cancer
• 18 new diabetes cases identified and initiated on treatment
• 32 hypertension cases identified and initiated on treatment

Challenges:

• Limited funding to implement project activities despite high demand for services
• Low community awareness and limited knowledge and skills in NCD prevention and control, highlighting the need for intensified sensitization efforts

Recommendations:

• Appeal to partners and well-wishers to support implementation of the project
• Strengthen community sensitization and prevention programs to address the rising burden of NCDs, which are increasingly affecting Uganda’s socioeconomic development and placing a growing financial strain on the health system
