Early Childhood Situation in Mexico
Early Childhood Situation in Mexico

Domestic violence is understood as any action or omission committed by a family member within a power relationship, regardless of the physical space where it occurs, that harms the well-being, physical or psychological integrity, or the freedom and right to full development of another family member.

Poverty and domestic violence in Mexico are strongly related. Poverty can increase vulnerability to violence, while domestic violence can perpetuate poverty. Women and children living in poverty are more likely to be victims of violence, including abuse and neglect. A lack of financial resources can make it difficult for victims of domestic violence to escape abusive situations.

A UNICEF study found that 63% of children and adolescents living in poverty in Mexico have experienced some form of mistreatment.

The greater the number of adverse experiences or situations a child lives through between the ages of 0 and 6, the greater the impact on their emotional and cognitive state. At that stage of life, children are curious, explorative, and unaware of danger, which puts them at risk.

For example, if children have experienced violence at home or live in a violent environment, they learn that problems are solved through violence. In the early stages of life, children do not grasp danger but are highly receptive.

It is important to educate according to the needs of early childhood, in line with their stage of development and with a rights-based perspective, in order to prevent and address violence from early childhood.
