Thank You for Supporting Rescued Monkeys

By Alexandra Reddy and Jenny Botting | PASA Development Team

Rescued monkeys are now safe at a PASA sanctuary

As we reflect on our recent accomplishments in conserving Africa’s primates, PASA extends its heartfelt thanks to our dedicated supporters. Your unwavering commitment plays a pivotal role in safeguarding numerous primates, instilling hope, and facilitating their recovery. With your support, we are continuing to rescue apes and monkeys from the illegal wildlife trade, and working with our partners to bring a halt to this horrific trade.

In a landmark event in December, J.A.C.K. Primate Sanctuary, a PASA member in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), provided refuge to monkeys rescued from the clutches of illegal trafficking. This operation, a collaborative endeavor involving Togo authorities and the EAGLE Network, prevented these primates from being smuggled to Thailand. If they hadn’t been intercepted, it is likely that these monkeys would have suffered for years in terrible conditions in either the pet or entertainment industries. Originating from DRC, these animals were part of Africa's largest primate seizure, underscoring the critical importance of vigilant enforcement and international cooperation.

Dr. Kizito Kakule Musubao, PASA's Country Coordinator in DRC, played a crucial role in this rescue. Leveraging his expertise in veterinary medicine and conservation, Dr. Kizito coordinated the response this urgent situation. The operation revealed 40 primates that were stolen from DRC, representing eight different species and held in distressing conditions, highlighting the grim realities of the illegal wildlife trade.

Upon their arrival back in DRC, Dr. Kizito and a committed team provided essential medical care and rehabilitation, dedicating 12 days to nursing the stressed, injured, and malnourished monkeys back to health before they could be moved to the sanctuary. This endeavor not only illustrates the complexities of combating wildlife trafficking but also celebrates the spirit of collaboration that underpins our conservation efforts.

PASA is immensely grateful for the kindness and dedication demonstrated by our supporters. Your contributions are instrumental in enabling PASA member sanctuaries like J.A.C.K. to deliver the necessary care and rehabilitation for these primates. Together, we are forging a meaningful impact, championing primate conservation, and combating wildlife trafficking.

We thank you for your continued support and commitment to protecting Africa’s primates and their habitats.
