You may remember Bobga, the young gorilla who was just 15 months old when his mother was killed by poachers. He was found frightened, alone, and suffering from the trauma of losing his family. Thanks to your generous support and the expert care provided by PASA-accredited Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon, Bobga began to heal and rediscover his playful, curious spirit.
In 2019, Bobga was transferred to another accredited PASA member, Ape Action Africa, located at the Mefou Primate Sanctuary in Cameroon. This sanctuary is home to more than 300 rescued primates and is a safe haven where Bobga now lives in peace. He has joined a close-knit group of gorillas, including his adopted brothers Mbailassem and Chris. The group is truly special, containing a mix of male and female gorillas of many ages that resembles what a gorilla family would look like in the wild. Adult females Chickaboo and Lucy help care for the youngest, while the young males, including Bobga, play with everyone - creating a warm, playful, and supportive family dynamic. Bobga has built strong, affectionate bonds with the group and is now a confident and caring member of the family. He has an adventurous personality, and when he’s not play wrestling with his brother Mbailassem, he can often be found climbing to the top of the highest trees in his forest enclosure.
Rescued gorillas like Bobga receive individualized care at Mefou. The sanctuary staff, many of whom are from local communities, provide daily enrichment, nutritious meals, and medical support. These caregivers know each gorilla by name, understand their unique personalities and quirks, and are deeply dedicated to helping them recover from the traumas of the illegal wildlife trade.
PASA members Ape Action Africa and Limbe Wildlife Centre work hard to create a better future for wildlife. The teams runs thriving education programs that welcomes thousands of Cameroonian students to learn about primates and conservation. They also collaborate with government agencies to rescue animals and explore long-term habitat protection for possible reintroduction.
Your support makes this work possible. Because of you, Bobga has a second chance at life. He is no longer alone. He is part of a family, surrounded by caregivers who love him, and living in a safe, forested environment where he can grow strong and free.
Thank you for standing with Bobga and so many other orphaned primates. Your generosity has changed his life. We are deeply grateful for your compassion, and we look forward to sharing more stories of healing and hope made possible by your kindness.
