By Tavia | PA Certification Graduate
I started as a Tour Guide for Warner Bros. Studio Tours Hollywood back in 2019. After taking a huge leap of faith in 2017 I walked in alignment with destiny which called for my ultimate promotion and relocation to California. Tours was my way in and a beautiful avenue to not only express myself creatively but also prepare myself for everything that was in store. Thank you Daniel Ferguson: Director of Tour Operations for all of your mentorship and support.
I went through the Justice For My Sister PA Certification Program while working two full time jobs. From there, Justice for My Sister nominated me to the Warner Media: Access to Action program, which opened the doors for me to be placed in studio jobs. This is where I landed my first gig as a PA (Health & Safety) for S1 of HBO Max’s “The Sympathizer.” Working as a covid PA was the perfect introduction to the industry for me. This allowed me to get to know the full cast and crew on a first name basis as well as their roles and departments. It allowed me to learn first hand everyone and everything around me, as well as where I see myself fitting in these moving parts in the future.
This opportunity has fueled my career in so many ways. Gaining on set experience, working with A-list talent, learning how to set up and break down a tent in the middle of a sand storm and unloading a cold brick for a hot one with nails only names a few. The connections and friendships I made and cultivated throughout this process has set the standard and will hopefully last a lifetime.
If I can narrow it down to three essential takeaways that JFMS has granted me with, it'd be:
1. Protect your peace.
Proactively creating boundaries sets an intentional tone for you to creativity thrive throughout the day.
2. Advocate for yourself.
You are there for a reason: because you belong. Don't forget that. Show up as your whole self, humbly yet not afraid to take risks, initiative, and action towards anything unjust.
3. Be Ye Ready
Being on set is an ever-changing experience, so adaptability is key. Having a collaborative and can-do attitude will set you apart and create an environment of openness and opportunity.
I’d be remiss without thanking Kimberly Bautista for founding Justice for My Sister as well as the WM: ATA board and team especially Stevee-Rayne Warren and Kaitlyn Herring. You all made it possible for a black girl from Chicago: Matteson IL to be exact, to live and thrive within her dream, passion, and most importantly her purpose. I live for the day where I’ll be in the position to do the same for the next generation.
