Katie Boylan’s Story: A Journey of Courage and Care

In February 2017, at just 35 years old, Katie Boylan was diagnosed with colon cancer—a devastating shock for her and her family. Initially misled by the term “growth,” the reality of chemotherapy, radiation, and fertility preservation hit hard. Her diagnosis eventually progressed to stage 4, with the cancer spreading to her liver.

During this emotionally and physically draining time, Katie discovered Purple House Cancer Support. Her first call to the centre was filled with tears, but she was met with compassion and understanding. From that moment, Purple House became a lifeline.

How Donor Support Made a Difference

Thanks to donor generosity, Katie was able to access a wide range of free services, including:

• Counselling with professionals who understood the emotional toll of cancer.
• Complementary therapies like reflexology and acupuncture to ease physical symptoms.
• Creative writing classes and relaxation sessions that helped her reconnect with herself.
• Support for her family, especially her mother, who was by her side throughout.

Even when Katie was too ill to attend in person, Purple House remained a constant source of support—never pressuring, always present.

The Outcome

Despite aggressive treatment and multiple surgeries, Katie’s cancer was successfully removed in a 9-hour operation. She continues to manage complications, including bladder damage, but remains hopeful and empowered.

Today, Katie is a board member of Purple House and a passionate advocate for cancer support services. Her journey is a powerful example of how donor-funded care can transform lives—not just medically, but emotionally and socially.

• Children, adolescent, and young adult services tailored to emotional and developmental needs.
• Counselling, art therapy, and play therapy to help young people cope with cancer in their families.
• Transport services, complementary therapies, and survivorship programmes for adults navigating treatment and recovery.
