By Yami Nunez Maldonado | Manager, Grants Grant Program
She was only 14 when she fled Central America with her mother, walking for days through Mexico in search of safety. On the road to Tapachula, she got her first menstrual period. Nervous to disrupt the pace of the trip, she kept moving, quietly tearing a piece of cloth from her backpack to use, carrying her pain and discomfort in silence and shame.
Then, by chance, she and her mother crossed paths with a local group supported by Fondo Semillas. There, she joined a workshop on menstrual hygiene, where volunteers spoke calmly and reminded her that menstruation is natural, not something to hide. She received a care kit, guidance, and—most importantly—the feeling of not being alone.
This is the kind of sanctuary Fondo Semillas makes possible for migrant girls and women traveling through Mexico. They are also October’s Project of the Month, meaning they just received a grant from this fund.
Projects like this remind us that two things are happening at once: places of hardship are growing more dire, and places of care, relief, and empowerment are also pointing to a way forward together.
When we support projects like Fondo Semillas, we are supporting sanctuaries of care that offer a space to resource and reconnect along their tough journeys. Your donation breathes life into these spaces and keeps them going.
Here’s what Ana Godínez of Fondo Semillas wants to share with you:
“In a world fueled by hate speech, the work of activists and the support of donors help us regain hope. Activists work for a better world for everyone. They just need a vote of confidence from someone else who wants the same thing. This opportunity will help us continue to support migrant girls and now, pregnant mothers who emigrate.”
Beyond meeting immediate needs, Fondo Semillas invests in the leadership of grassroots women and girls to drive long-term social change. They believe that when women are supported and connected, entire communities benefit.
Your donation helps migrant girls and women access shelter, safety, and justice, while also strengthening the organizations fighting for their rights and futures.
Thank you for standing with #GirlsWhoMigrate and with the women leaders building a safer, more just world. And if you're looking for more spaces to celebrate women-led change, check out our Women and Girls Storytelling Festival, happening on October 6,
With gratitude, and until next time,
