The super typhoon Mangkhuthit Hong Kong in September and Tai O is expected to be one of the hardest hit areas. It is because Tai O is located in a low-lying and coastal area, and theMangkhut is regarded as the strongest typhoon to strike Hong Kongand cause flooding. The government has arranged a tourist bus to evacuate residents, how about stray cats?

The founder of the Tai O Stray Cats Home, German, started to do some preparation with volunteers for stray/street cats in different places in Tai O one week before the arrival of the typhoon. We understand that stray/street cats know how to find a refuge in high places or vacant homes because they are more sensitive than people; however, there are some places in Tai O where there is a chance for trees collapse or landslides, and we need to be there to catch cats and arrange them in a safer place.

German mentioned that on the eve of the typhoon, there were more than 20 stray cats and domestic cats placed on the third floor of Tai O Stray Cat Home campus with some volunteers to look after them; she knew that the total number of stray cats in the campus were not significant, but it is enough to make her exhausted.

We would like to let all of you know that our current lease of Tai O Stray Cat Home campus will be expire the end of this year (2018), German was planning to rent a cheaper place, like a shack or a hut, because the organization doesn’t have much reserve to rent the existing place. At this moment, we would like to ask for your donations to help us to continue to rent the current place for our stray cats; it is about HK$100,000.00 (US$12,780.00) for the annual rent. Because of the Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong this year and Typhoon Hato last year, we know that there is a trend of flooding every year; it is better to have a campus for Tai O Stray Home on the higher floor (at least 3rdfloor) and the existing place is the best place as a temporary home for stray cats and cats rehabilitation center.
