Time flies, it is already late March of 2024; life as usual in Tai O. Still busy to take care of healthy and sick, young and old, good and naughty stray cats.
I would like to let you know that some people in Tai O talk about cats, they think that please don’t interfere those stray cats, they feel there is lesser cats in Tai O. Also, they think it is better to reduce the number of sterilizations, let them to continue to have next generation to maintain the title of Cat Island for Tai O.
Other people agree that fewer stray cats in Tai O may cause lesser cats to catch rats and fewer visitor to come to Tai O to take photos of stray cats; as a result, it will affect the cleanliness and business respectively.
Actually, if you ask me, I (as an animal volunteer for about twelve years) prefer to keep control the stray cat numbers in Tai O. You know human will get old and get sick, and this is the same as cats. I once thought that for those stray cats after being cured, I would like to release them, let them to stay outdoors and live a free life. But after a while they will get sick again and then it will be very difficult to catch them and bring them to see a veterinarian (Vet). Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), oral ulcers, and kidney failure are the most common diseases in Tai O’s cats. Money and time for taking care of them cannot be understood and empathized by outsiders; they only judged that you are not doing enough for stray cats.
Just simply thinking about taking care for stray cats, I would like to spend the rest of my life to work hard to improve their lives’ quality. Most of the time, people treat stray cats/dogs/animals as lower grade animals, beasts, or even tools; while we (Tai O Stray Cat Home’s volunteers) treat them as children, members of the community, and vulnerable groups. Therefore, we need to protect, take good care of, and love them.
Something about a stray cat called “Ah Huang”
We successfully caught Ah Huang to see a Vet because many passers-by concern, his eyes issue for some times. For me, I thought about do we need to find a specialist for his eye surgery; but it will not be a small amount of medical fee. Anyway, we cannot think too much and just do as much as we can. After Vet’s visit, Ah Huang found out that he has FIV. Besides, one of his teeth was swollen and inflamed; therefore, it is needed to be removed. In addition, his eyes are probably blind with the blurred vision on both sides; per Vet mentioned, Ah Huang is old and there is a little chance to do surgery to cure his eyes. For that reason, we need to bring Ah Huang to stay in Tai O Stray Cat Home’s campus for the rest of his life instead of releasing him to the outdoors. I think this may be the best arrangement for him.
As you can see due to sickness and aging problems in cats, we have lots of medical expenses; and thus, we need you, we ask for your donation to help our stray cats and abandon cats.
