This is a progress report submitted for the Children's Uji Program (CUP) with regards to Preventing Maternal & Child Malnutrition in Kenya implemented by Project Afya in Githurai. The schools in this locality have been affected by childhood malnutrition due to the high rate of poverty in the community. If this problem is not addressed in time, the effects are usually irreversible.
The CUP was rolled out in June 2021, and so far 165 children in the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) at Kimbo Githurai Primary School have benefitted. We provide nutritious breakfast porridge to the children twice a week, and already there has been an increase in school enrollment from 136-165 children. Our goal is to eventually be able to provide porridge 5 days a week.
The program runs with the help of community volunteers who help in preparing and making sure that the porridge cools to the right temperatures before serving. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff and volunteers for their important contribution. We appreciate your effort.
‘Shantel’, a pupil in PP2 came to where our Country Director was standing and held her hand and said, “Auntie, asante jana usiku hatukula supper tulikunywa tu strungi juu daddy hakuwa na pesa na hata sister yangu mdogo alipewa chakula kidogo ile ilibaki juzi na mum”. This translates to “Auntie thank you, last night we only had strong tea for supper and in the morning I came to school because daddy did not have money to buy food, and I also have a little sister who was given leftover food by mum”.
The kids are always excited whenever they see our cook Darius take porridge to their classrooms. They call him ‘Uncle porridge’, because he leaves them full, happy and motivated for the day. Darius is generally very passionate about children. He is always having fun with them and they have become very fond of him.
To our donors we cannot thank you enough for your continued support and dedication. Your continued financial support makes it possible for us to fight hunger and give children a better chance in life.
Thank you!
