Promoting Voluntary Blood Donation in Sri Lanka" aims to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation through targeted programs in schools, universities, and communities. The project organizes blood donation camps, creates a system to address urgent blood needs, and celebrates Blood Donation Day to honor and appreciate donors. By fostering a culture of voluntary blood donation, the initiative seeks to build a sustainable network to save lives across Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka faces a critical shortage of voluntary blood donors, with only 1.5% of the population donating annually, below the WHO-recommended 2%. Hospitals require over 400,000 blood units yearly, but inconsistent donations often lead to supply gaps, risking lives during emergencies, surgeries, and treatments for conditions like cancer and anemia. Limited awareness, cultural stigmas, and logistical challenges further hinder blood donation efforts, highlighting the urgent need for action
This project will promote voluntary blood donation by raising awareness in schools, universities, and communities to address cultural stigmas and misconceptions. Regular blood donation camps will ensure a reliable supply of blood units, while a responsive system will be developed to meet urgent needs. Celebrating Blood Donation Day and recognizing donors will encourage ongoing participation, creating a sustainable culture of voluntary blood donation to save lives across Sri Lanka.
The project will create a sustainable culture of voluntary blood donation in Sri Lanka, ensuring a steady supply of life-saving blood for emergencies, surgeries, and medical treatments. By fostering awareness and breaking stigmas, it will empower communities to actively support healthcare systems. The recognition of donors and establishment of an efficient blood service system will strengthen trust and participation, reducing blood shortages and saving countless lives in the long term.
