Update: Bicycles Are Driving Learning in Adaklu

By Christina Randazzo | Friends of Adaklu Volunteer

How Bicycles Are Powering Education & Digital Literacy in Adaklu

Every week at the Good Life Centre, students gather to build essential computer and technology skills that will shape their futures. But for many of these students, the biggest challenge was not learning to use a computer. It was getting to class at all. Some were walking nearly an hour round trip, arriving exhausted or missing lessons entirely.

To remove this barrier, Friends of Adaklu provided bicycles to three groups of students who live farthest from the center. What followed has been nothing short of transformational.

Attendance That Changed Everything

With reliable transportation, students now arrive on time, consistently, and ready to learn. Attendance has increased, absences have dropped, and lateness has become rare. Students share that they feel more confident and motivated because they know they can get to class safely and dependably.

More Energy. Better Learning. Bigger Gains.

Less time on the road means more energy in the classroom. Students are now focused, engaged, and able to complete assignments and hands on practice during each session. Before receiving bicycles, some students needed extra classes just to keep up. Today, they are learning alongside their peers and fully participating in every lesson.

A Ripple Effect Through the Community

Parents and guardians have expressed heartfelt gratitude for the bicycle program. Knowing their children no longer have to walk long distances for after school programs brings peace of mind. Students often ride together, building friendships and teamwork along the way. Bicycles also offer families an affordable, environmentally friendly transportation option that benefits daily life beyond school.

Challenges We Continue to Tackle

Like all meaningful programs, this one comes with challenges. Some bicycles need maintenance, which can be difficult for students to afford. Dusty and uneven roads also pose safety and health concerns, even though every bicycle was distributed with a helmet. These realities remind us that ongoing support is essential.

Pedaling Forward Together

The bicycle initiative has had a powerful and lasting impact on our Digital Literacy Program. Students are attending regularly, learning more effectively, and feeling supported by their community. With continued donor support, we can maintain the bicycles, provide safety equipment, and ensure students keep moving forward.

Thank you for helping our students arrive ready to learn, dream, and build a brighter future.
