Summary

Female genital mutilation (FGM) affects thousands of girls in Northern Nigeria, causing lifelong physical and psychological harm. This project will reach 4,800 girls through education, awareness campaigns, and community engagement, offering safe spaces and resources for protection. By equipping girls, families, & local leaders with knowledge, the program reduces the risk of FGM. Immediate action is needed to prevent irreversible harm and safeguard girls' health, safety, and future opportunities.

Challenge

FGM remains widespread in parts of Northern Nigeria, with cultural pressures placing girls at risk from a young age. It can cause severe health issues, including infections, complications in childbirth, and lasting psychological trauma. Families often lack access to alternatives or knowledge about the risks. Without intervention, thousands of girls continue to face life-altering harm that limits their health, education, and personal development.

Solution

The project will educate girls, families, and community leaders about the dangers of FGM and provide safe spaces where girls can seek guidance and support. Awareness campaigns and mentorship will teach alternatives to harmful practices. Local leaders will be trained to advocate for girls' safety. By combining education, community engagement, and protective resources, the program reduces girls' exposure to FGM and promotes safer, healthier communities.

Long-Term Impact

Girls who avoid FGM maintain better physical and mental health, which increases their ability to attend school and participate in community life. Communities adopting safer practices experience improved health outcomes and fewer complications related to FGM. This program creates sustainable awareness and shifts cultural norms, reducing FGM rates in the region. Educated & protected girls can grow into adults who contribute to social and economic development without the lifelong consequences of FGM
