This year, Rainforest Rescue has encountered several significant challenges, most notably the record-breaking floods resulting from Cyclone Jasper in December 2023. Alongside recovery efforts from Jasper, locals have experienced one of the ‘wettest’ wet seasons in the past decade. Access to our properties north of the Daintree River was restricted for many months, but our land management team recently managed to visit Lots 11 and 12 Forest Creek Rd – two properties we rescued last year, boasting National Park and World Heritage Area connectivity – to assess their condition and install a wildlife camera.
Wildlife Monitoring and Data Collection
Wildlife cameras provide critical data on the biodiversity within our protected areas, helping monitor ecosystem health and track changes over time. These cameras also offer insights into animal behavior, breeding patterns, and habitat preferences. Recently, we have had success with wildlife footage on another property purchased in 2022 - Lot 41 Cape Tribulation Road.
On Lot 41, Land Manager Hayden White captured the story of a cassowary family, documenting a male and female breeding pair and their recently hatched chicks as they grew. Notably, the female remained with the family, a rare behavior as typically the male is the diligent solo parent. The footage can be viewed on our instagram channel.
With the recent installation of a camera on Lot 11, we hope to capture similarly remarkable footage. This area is prime habitat for the elusive Musky Rat-kangaroo (Hypsiprymnodon moschatus), Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii), and Spectacled Flying-fox (Pteropus conspicillatus).
A Living Repository of Cultural Heritage and Spiritual Beliefs
Lots 11 and 12 sit within the Daintree Rainforest, or julay, on Eastern Kuku Yalanji country. This land holds immense significance for the Kuku Yalanji people, it is a living repository of their cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs. For generations, the Kuku Yalanji have forged a deep connection with this ancient rainforest, which sustained their way of life through its rich biodiversity and natural resources. The forest is intricately woven into their stories, ceremonies, and traditional practices, serving as a source of food, medicine, shelter, and spiritual nourishment. The protection of this pocket of rainforest ensures the cultural identity and heritage of the Kuku Yalanji people continues to thrive.
“The relationship between Rainforest Rescue staff working with our Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners is not only of Reconciliation but a wonderful way to come together to learn about and to store botanical and cultural plant knowledge and to preserve, protect and regrow the rainforest together. This is something that sits well with my Wawu (spirit) and I will support their efforts where I can” Sheryl J Burchill - Kuku Yalanji artist and Rainforest Rescue collaborator
Purchase and Protection Efforts
The 'Purchase and Protect Forever Endangered Rainforest' project continues to make significant strides in conserving high conservation value rainforest in the Daintree. By purchasing vulnerable rainforest sites not already part of the protected Daintree National Park, we prevent potentially devastating development that could harm rare and endangered species.
We are immensely grateful for the generous support of Rainforest Rescuers worldwide, It is because of supporters like you, that we are able to continue our mission of protecting these ancient rainforests. Your contributions directly impact the preservation of this precious natural resource, ensuring a healthier planet and the survival of ancient flora and fauna for future generations.
Thank you for your continued support of Rainforest Rescue.
