Cambodian children are at risk on their daily commute to get an education. Globally, road crashes are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29. In Cambodia, road traffic injuries are among the leading causes of death and disability among children and adolescents, with students accounting for 12% of all road fatalities in 2022 and nearly one-half of road fatalities affecting primary and secondary school students. The Cambodian government has recognized this need and has taken steps to address road safety around schools.
With support of the FIA Foundation and coordination by AIP Foundation, a delegation from Cambodia’s government institutions embarked on a Safe School Zones Study Mission in Vietnam. The mission took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Pleiku City, and Dong Nai Province from March 3-7, 2025. Eight delegates from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS), National Road Safety Committee (NRSC), Ministry of Public Works and Transport, National Police, and Ministry of Interior attended the study mission.
The overall objective of the study mission was to strengthen the government relationship and collaboration between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and for the visiting delegation to learn from Vietnam’s experience improving road safety efforts with a particular focus on children’s safety through safe school zones interventions, including the education and law enforcement related to 30km/h speed limit.
Following the mission, the representative of the MoEYS strongly supported the SSZ interventions, expressing their readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders including AIP Foundation and utilize the Star Rating for School program to conduct assessments for school zone modifications.
AIP Foundation will continue to educate, advocate, and invest in safe mobility for Cambodian workers. Visit us here and follow us to learn more about our work and receive the latest updates.
