The Coconut Wire is an informal way for people on islands to spread the word about what's happening. Now there is a Coconut Wire just for seabirds! Graduates of our recent seabird monitoring training workshop are part of online chat groups on WhatsApp and Facebook which keep us all updated on observations in the field, provide a forum to ask questions, and generally maintain a support network of people who care for seabirds and their habitats.
For example, this photo of Brown Pelicans was uploaded by a member of one of these groups. During the winter months, year-round resident seabirds like Pelicans and Boobies can be found nesting whereas the summer months are when you'll also find nesting migratory birds like terns and gulls.
We are currently planning for our next training workshop to take place in 2016. It is exciting to be building this active network of advocates for seabirds and other wildlife and we look forward to expanding it further with upcoming workshops.
Thank you for helping to make this work possible, we couldn't do it without you!
With Gratitude,
Natalia Collier
