During our first surveys of remote seabird nesting islands, we encountered many signs of seabird harvesting, such as piles of carcasses, traps, and people with buckets of eggs. So in 2014, your donations funded our first seabird monitoring effort for a remote group of islands where harvesting was a major issue.
Over the last two seasons, Wayne, from the nearby island of Grenada, has been working with fishermen during his surveys, making them more aware of the imminent danger of extinction for local seabirds. Wayne’s presence has made a huge difference for these islands. During the last two years, no evidence of harvesting was found and the eggs Wayne monitored hatched successfully. Now he is back in the field and the seabird breeding season is in full swing with more nesting birds than when he started two years ago!
We are now planning our next training workshop so we can have more advocates like Wayne, and Philman who you met in our last report. The workshop is a little over a month away but we need to reach our funding goal to make it happen. We have volunteer trainers lined up, a conference space donated, but we still need to pay for travel and lodging for the participants, many of whom are fishermen struggling to make ends meet. They are ready to take action and help the seabirds, but we need your support to make it happen.
Please consider making a contribution; your help has been so important and we would love to expand our program and reach more islands and the seabirds who call them home. Donating on GlobalGiving’s Bonus Day (June 15th), when donations can be matched, is a wonderful opportunity to have an even greater impact. I look forward to sharing more positive news with you and thank you for all you do to make this valuable work possible.
