Thank you for choosing to support our work to protect India’s tigers and promote co-existence.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for field conservation projects this year, as countries around the world experienced lockdowns and travel restrictions. During recent months, the Satpuda Landscape Tiger Programme (SLTP) team has embraced new technology to ensure vital tiger monitoring can continue, and local education initiatives can thrive despite the challenges.
Landscape Monitoring
The Satpuda Foundation supports government policy-decision making affecting tigers by attending meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops and site visits. This year, many of these sessions have taken place online, utilising web-hosted platforms such as Zoom and Teams. The team’s attendance at these sessions is crucial for suggesting mitigation measures to avert development projects which would negatively impact wild tigers. In the field, camera traps have never been more important for remote monitoring, and new pictures have shown tigers using underpasses on major roads for the first time, with reduced tiger (and leopard) deaths in the area a really positive sign.
School Education Programme
To adapt to the challenges of national lockdown, the SLTP team set up a WhatsApp group and arranged online activities for students, continuing their important conservation outreach even under these difficult circumstances. Implemented by the Bombay Natural History Society, the SLTP team helped ten model ‘Green Schools’ develop their own conservation curriculum. Tiger information posters featuring relevant local reserves were presented in each school together with a lecture on conservation – inspiring the next generation to step up for tigers!
Thank you for your continued support for this vital conservation programme.
