Jeju's UNESCO World Natural Heritage ocean is recognized by the world-but protected by people few ever see. These frontline marine activists clean beaches, monitor fragile ecosystems, and educate communities how to care for the sea. Yet many are forced to leave this work just to make a living. By supporting this project, you stand with the people who protect Jeju's ocean-so its defenders, and the ocean itself, can endure.
Jeju's beautiful ocean is widely celebrated, yet the lives of those who protect it remain largely invisible. Despite their essential role, local NGO activists face limited support. Many have already left-or are considering leaving-the field simply to make a living. When an activist leaves, irreplaceable local knowledge, community trust, and conservation continuity are lost. No matter how globally valuable Jeju's natural heritage are, it cannot survive without people on the ground to protect it.
Since 2020, K-Green Foundation has supported around 10 marine conservation nonprofits each year, helping collect 175,703 kg of marine plastic waste. Building on this experience, KGF will directly support activists protecting Jeju's ocean by offering living stipends and activity funding, capacity-building programs and peer networks to prevent burnout. By investing in the people who safeguard the ocean, this project will help ensure Jeju's marine protection remains effective and long-lasting.
With stable support, marine NGO activists can remain in the field long-term, protecting Jeju's ocean for future generations. They will regain stability, strengthen resilience, and deepen ties with local communities, expanding the impact of their work. Beyond Jeju, this project promotes a people-centered approach to conservation and can inspire nationwide support for environmental activists. Protecting the people who protect the ocean is essential for a healthier, more just future for all.
