From Kuruwitu to Kanamai: The Mama Karangas’ Work Continues

I am delighted to share our latest update on this vital project, which your generous donation is helping to support.

What began with just 18 Mama Karangas at the Kuruwitu landing site has grown into a network of more than 100 women across neighbouring communities. The original women are now sharing their knowledge and experience with others, helping the project grow and creating new opportunities for women to strengthen their livelihoods while protecting their coastline.

A new chapter at Kanamai

The next phase of this work is now underway at Kanamai Beach, where a further 35 women from the Soft Coral Kanamai Self Help Group are joining the Trash for Cash initiative.

The women have received practical training from experienced Mama Karangas in Kuruwitu, learning how to collect, sort and prepare plastic waste for recycling. They have now begun their first beach clean ups, collecting plastic and discarded fishing nets and preparing recyclable material for sale.

This is about more than simply cleaning the beach. The women are turning waste into an opportunity to earn additional income, while helping to protect the coastline and marine environment that their families depend upon.

Most importantly, the knowledge is now being passed from one group of women to another. The Mama Karangas who began this work are becoming teachers and leaders, helping more women to develop new skills and take an active role in protecting their environment.
