Coffee Tree Seedlings in Mae Chaem

This year marks 10 years that we have been working on biochar - learning how to make it accessible to smallholder farmers and expanding our networks of farms committed to stopping open field burning that has devastating impact around the world.  Your generous support has enabled us to make significant progress in the “Stop the Smoke!” program, reducing harmful smoke emissions and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Here are the latest highlights:

  • Fruit Tree Pruning and Biochar Production: In Phrao, farmers are calling when their fruit tree prunings are dry and ready to be made into Biochar. Our teams head out to make the biochar in large portable troughs. This approach has effectively reduced the smoke generated from burning these branches in open fires. Farmers in the community who do not have ample feedstock for biochar production eagerly await this biochar output to enhance their farms' productivity.
  • Expansion to Lamphun and Mae Chaem: We are excited to share that we recently sent six TLUD kilns to Lamphun as part of a new project. Additionally, in Mae Chaem, our teams are gearing up to produce biochar for use in the agroforestry program underway there. These expansions mark further progress in our mission to spread the benefits of biochar production and utilization.
  • Biochar Adoption in Fields and Orchards: We are pleased to report that a growing number of farmers, approximately 100, have embraced the use of biochar in their fields and orchards. Their positive experiences and results serve as powerful testimonials of the efficacy of biochar in enhancing agricultural practices and yields.
  • Mentoring Project in Indonesia: We are proud to be mentoring a project in Indonesia that focuses on expanding biochar production using waste crops, specifically coconut and palm oil fronds. This initiative holds great potential for sustainable waste management and biochar utilization in the region.
  • Expanding Networks in Africa: Our efforts in Africa continue to flourish, with new networks of farmers identified in Uganda and Liberia. In Malawi, we have 183 villages signed up for training in the coming months, with a particular focus on areas impacted by the recent cyclone. Biochar will play a crucial role in aiding the restoration of their farms. Furthermore, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is progressing rapidly, with additional training and community projects, such as raising rabbits for food and sales, gaining momentum.

These accomplishments are a testament to the collective impact we are making together. Your support has paved the way for tangible change in communities around the world. We extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering commitment to our cause.

Should you have any questions or wish to delve deeper into our projects, please feel free to reach out to us. Together, we will continue to stop the smoke and foster sustainable agricultural practices for a better future.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Dana, Michael, Evelind and the Global Biochar Team
