Stop the Smoke - Reduce Global Warming

Michael, Aom, and I just spent three days as trainers at the ECHO Asia Agriculture and Community Development Conference in Chiang Mai, sharing how to make biochar and connecting with development workers from across Asia, one from as far as Cameroon.

Biochar is now being made and used in dozens of countries. It was a key topic at this biennial gathering, hosted by ECHO, a global organization with a strong presence in Asia.

Their model farm in Chiang Mai regularly hosts Warm Heart training sessions, and we continue to partner on community projects to spread biochar knowledge and practical skills.

Over thirty languages were represented at the conference, and every participant left ready to return home and teach smallholder farmers how to make and use biochar.

In Thailand, momentum continues to build in both the private and academic sectors. Joint projects are testing biochar in asphalt, erosion prevention, and water filtration.

Grab, the delivery service operating in Thailand and seven other Asian countries, is buying biochar carbon credits to offset its emissions—each credit representing field or mill waste that wasn’t burned.

The National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) is preparing to earn accreditation for biochar content and emissions testing later this year. This will help producers verify and certify their biochar, improving market access and quality assurance.

At Warm Heart, Aom is continuing to test a range of feedstocks to match the right kiln types. As inquiries come in from around the country, we’re sharing practical advice to help communities produce biochar safely and effectively—turning waste into value, and avoiding smoke.
