An Wet and Inspiring Start to 2023

Welcome to 2023! Whilst others were still settling into the new year, Rainforest Rescue had already kicked it off with a bang! We have lots of great news that we’re excited to share with you ...

YOU DID IT, LOT 41 IS NOW PROTECTED FOREVER!

First off, we have incredible news about Lot 41 Cape Tribulation Road. This property was our biggest single appeal-driven rescue of intact Daintree habitat, and our greatest leap of faith. And because of you, and the hundreds of rainforest rescuers like you, it is now Protected Forever!

At 18.6 hectares, Lot 41 has effectively DOUBLED the size of the Cape Kimberley Wildlife Corridor. This is history in the making, both in the significant capital involved, and how this biodiversity-rich property is a significant acquisition for this corridor and overall environmental protection in the Daintree.

ANNUAL TREE PLANTING DAY 2023

Rainforest Rescue HQ is well underway with preparations for our Annual Community Tree Planting Day - slated for Saturday May 6th - and you’re invited! This is our biggest event of the year with staff, business partners, foundations, board members, donors and volunteers from all over Australia (and the world) attending.

The tree planting will take place at the NightWings Rainforest Centre, where we are seeing the transformation of 15-hectares of old sugarcane fields back into a thriving rainforest habitat.

The restoration project at NightWings began in 2015. Cassowary had not been seen in this area for forty years before we spotted our first juvenile back in December 2018. Since then, although quite elusive, 'evidence' of their presence continues. This is proof that that our restoration work really does welcome wildlife back to the land they once inhabited.

If you wish to join us at NightWings, you can find more information and details of how to register here.

NATIVE NURSERY NEWS

At the start of the new year, Nursery Manager, Marine, and her team started the process of moving seedlings into the newly constructed shade house. The whole site is beginning to feel much more like a nursery than a construction site! Work is also well underway on the propagation tunnel, with the last of the upright posts having recently been installed.

The wet season has provided many challenges in the progress of completing the new nursery, and while the team perseveres through light drizzle, the heavier tropical rain has forced many an unplanned break and early finish.

LIFE ON THE LAND

The wet season has also brought its fair share of flooding, as a result, our land management team have had many obstacles to overcome. But the heavy rain does have a silver lining—The trees at both Nightwings and our other restoration project, Tranquility on the Daintree, are absolutely flourishing.

In some parts of Tranquility, it already feels as though you are walking through a forest—An incredible achievement for a project that began in 2021!

Life presents itself everywhere on both sites. The team and wildlife cameras have spotted some lovely fairy-wrens, white-lipped tree frogs, four O’clock moths, bandicoots, Papuan frogmouths, a young padymelon, as well as a few too many unfortunate run-ins with native wasps (ouch!).

This lush, young forest is thriving and supporting all this life thanks to you, our supporters! We wouldn’t be where we are today without our network of incredible business partners, regular donors and supporters worldwide, working to Protect, Restore and spread awareness for the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest.
