Dear Patron,
Greetings from El Shaddai Charitable Trust!
We bring to you our latest report on Protecting Women from Sex Trafficking.
Sex trafficking is a significant issue in India, with various regions serving as source, transit, and destination points for victims. Victims of sex trafficking in India are often young girls and women, including those from oppressed castes and marginalized tribal communities. Traffickers take advantage of vulnerabilities such as poverty, lack of legal protection, and food insecurity to lure, trick, and force them into exploitation.
With this aim in mind, Project Rena was started in Mumbai to fight against victims of human trafficking in the red-light district of Turbhe. Through this project, we have rescued many women and children living in captivity. Here they are provided with vocational training, education, and job placement assistance to help survivors gain financial independence and reintegrate into society.
Under the Rena Project, we have started a Home for the children from the red light areas. Here they are provided food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and counselling. Presently we have 15 children living in this home. 30 children are attending the tuition classes, 15 children are attending our nursery classes and 25 women are attending our tailoring classes. The Programmes under this Project is categorized under Sex worker’s children Literacy program, adult literacy program and Tailoring program
We conduct outreach work where in our staff meet around 20 women and 30 children in red light areas of Turbhe and Bhandup. They are given information about the work we do and how these programmes can help them in transforming their lives and the lives of the children. Various awareness camps are also held like child’s rights, breast cancer awareness programme, HIV awareness programme etc. There is a heart-touching story of a woman who was rescued through the Rena Project. Her story dates back to when she was a teenager. Like every other teenager who has a crush on celebrities. Many times friendsdo take extreme measures just to meet their favorite celebrity.
So Rukma(name changed) had a big crush on her favourites Indian Actor and decided to meet him in Mumbai. She met a man who promised to introduce her to the star. But he led her to the worst place in Mumbai. That is the Red light Area. She fell in the clutches of the predator and before she knew it, had lost her youth. After many years, she managed through our Project to change her life. She will not be able to get back what she lost, but she can change the future now. Many such women are caught in this fire and just need a helping hand. We have been able to help many women like these and also their children. We could achieve this, only with your constant support and help in making this dream a reality.
We the El Shaddai family express our deepest gratitude for your generous sponsorship and support and we look forward to this continued friendship with you.
Sincerely
El Shaddai Family
