In a recent project visit to Arusha, Tanzania, Blue Cross Society of Tanzania (BCST) reaffirmed its commitment to tackling alcohol and other drug use among the youth – a mission that continues to inspire change.
The visit was filled with productive meetings and insightful discussions and highlighted the progress of the BCST’s initiatives. Throughout the week, several schools implementing the BCST Life Skills Education program opened their doors to share remarkable progress. The evidence of change was undeniable: reports highlighted significant reductions in drug use among students. School principals and teachers shared their experiences of how the “Proud to Be Drug-Free” campaign by BCST and life skills training have transformed their schools. Notably, in some schools, no students were found with drugs this year, a marked improvement from previous years. Additionally, improved academic scores turned out to be a welcome side effect of the Life Skill education, a result much appreciated by the school administration.
Peer educators are the heart of the BCST's success. These inspiring young leaders shared remarkable stories of personal growth and the transformative impact they've made in their communities, showcasing the incredible reach of the program. It's truly uplifting to collaborate with such dedicated young people who generously invest their time, energy, and talents to empower their peers. The project simply wouldn't be possible without them!
