Empowering Women in Tanzania

By Anna Schwaller | Project Assistant

Celebrating the International Women's Day in March
Celebrating the International Women's Day in March

The project team of Blue Cross Tanzania, along with its dedicated peer educators, continues to work tirelessly across schools, churches, and communities to address and challenge the cultural and gender norms that contribute to the normalization of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). These preventative efforts are integrated into Life Skills sessions in schools and through life skills clubs, as well as broader mass communication campaigns broadcast via radio and television.

To raise awareness, the team participates in key international events, including International Women’s Day (March 8) and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Through these campaigns, they proactively aim to promote gender equality and foster more equitable perceptions of gender roles, emphasizing the belief that women and men can perform the same roles.

This year, International Women’s Day was especially meaningful for Blue Cross Tanzania, as the team put a strong focus on promoting women’s rights and pushing for greater gender equality. One of the central goals was to economically empower disadvantaged women by providing grants to support small businesses, helping them to achieve financial independence. These grants enable them to start or expand income-generating activities such as farming, food cending, or craft production. In addition to its direct community work, Blue Cross Tanzania support the Arusha City Council’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being of women at the community level.

The project team is truly committed to empowering women of all ages to lead lives free from substance use and to make healthy life choices – through a combination of education, support systems, and strong advocacy efforts.

Thank you so much, Blue Cross Tanzania, for making a meaningful difference in the lives of countless women!!
