As the dry season gives way to the promise of renewal, we are proud to share progress from our elephant conservation work in Southern Africa, made possible through your continued generosity.
This year, DSWF is once again supporting the vital operations of the Special Anti-Poaching Unit (SAPU), a highly trained team tasked with protecting elephants and other vulnerable species within the vast Elephant Release Area. Informed by intelligence gathered through trusted networks, SAPU carries out targeted operations to intercept poachers before harm can be done. Over the course of this year, our partners will carry out an estimated 20,000 ranger patrol days, covering an expanded area of at least 30,000km². To ensure these patrols are as effective as possible, 100 rangers will receive additional training in law enforcement operations, intelligence gathering and tactical skills.
The Community Outreach Programme continues to play a crucial role in promoting human-wildlife coexistence. This year, 100 farmers living near elephant habitats will receive training in humane and effective deterrents, supported by early warning systems, rapid response, and compassionate aftercare following conflict incidents. Twelve community meetings and at least six radio broadcasts will promote awareness and reporting, and our partner aims to respond to all human-wildlife conflict (HWC) reports within 48 hours, providing support to 95% of affected individuals within two weeks.
Empowering local people remains central to our vision. Approximately 100 women will take part in six empowerment training sessions to develop life skills and strengthen conservation understanding.100 young people will receive peer-led training focused on sustainable livelihoods, helping to reduce reliance on natural resources and wildlife crime.
The Wildlife Discovery Centre continues to serve as a vital hub for education and inspiration. Over the next year, it is expected that 10,000 people will visit the centre, including 1,000 children attending Discovery Days and a further 1,000 participating in weekly Conservation Clubs. Fifty teachers will also receive training to help integrate conservation into their lessons and inspire the next generation of wildlife guardians.
Thank you for supporting this essential work. Your contributions are helping to secure a future where elephants and people can thrive side by side.
