It’s hard to believe that we are already five months into 2024! So much has happened in this short space of time, and our on-the-ground teams have been exceptionally busy.
Our team on Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park have been particularly busy, with subadult African Wild Dogs showing increasing signs of dispersal. With limited space within the protected area for them to move, and the dangers of them breaking past the barriers of the fenceline significant, intensive daily monitoring is currently more important than ever.
As we head into our winter months here in South Africa, our teams are also preparing for African Wild Dog denning season and are monitoring the packs closely in order to get an idea of where they will den this year. The success rate of their litters will be recorded and fed into national scientific research on the species.
Flying into Winter
In Vulture news, our teams in the Southern Drakensberg are also gearing up for winter, as this is when Bearded Vultures in the region nest. This regionally critically endangered species is currently in the process of selecting their nests and our team will be monitoring them closely for progress.
Further North, our Vulture teams have been responding to incidental poisonings and have been proactively ensuring that carcasses are being tested for lead post-mortem to establish cause of death. As always, the team is ready to respond to emergency events on the ground with the primary goal of catching potentially fatal poison sites as early as possible in order to prevent mass casualties.
Looking forward
Much is planned for the next few months to come, including some Vulture tagging work, collaring of Cheetah and African Wild Dogs, community outreach, and extensive data capture and field research. We thank you for your continued support in making this work possible.
