During this reporting period, MHO continued implementation of the project “Protecting Ethiopia’s Gelada Species of Old World Monkey”, an initiative focused on conserving the unique Gelada baboon population and improving coexistence between wildlife and communities living around protected areas. As always, the progress achieved by MHO is made possible only through the compassionate support of GlobalGiving, our individual donors, and corporate partners who share our vision of shared humanity and biodiversity conservation. Your continued commitment enables us to protect endangered wildlife while also supporting the livelihoods of people living in and around critical habitats.
Under this reporting cycle, the project delivered targeted support to one park ranger officer and one household residing within the park buffer zone. The ranger was provided with essential field equipment, including uniforms and durable shoes, which significantly improved mobility and effectiveness during daily patrols in Gelada habitats. This support enhances field presence, strengthens monitoring activities, and contributes to reducing threats such as habitat disturbance and human-wildlife conflict in sensitive grazing landscapes where Geladas depend on natural grasslands for survival.
In addition to conservation support, the project also provided livelihood assistance to one household living inside the park area, helping to reduce pressure on natural resources. This household, which relies on subsistence activities in close proximity to wildlife habitats, received basic livelihood support aimed at stabilizing daily needs and encouraging more sustainable interaction with the environment. The beneficiary shared that this assistance has helped ease immediate economic strain and reduced reliance on activities that could unintentionally disturb Gelada habitats.
Moving forward, MHO remains committed to integrating wildlife conservation with community livelihood support to ensure long-term protection of Ethiopia’s Gelada populations. We sincerely thank all our supporters whose generosity continues to translate into practical conservation action, improved ranger capacity, and stronger harmony between people and wildlife
