While the SEED team is still working away to secure full funding to get underway with Project Ala, we thought that you might like to hear a bit more about the lemurs for which you have kindly donated money to save.
The first of our three target species is the endangered Southern Woolly Lemur (Avahi meridionalis). Their range is limited to a small area of the Ansoy region in southeast Madagascar, and relatively little is known about the daily (or rather, nightly) habits of these wide-eyed nocturnal creatures. We hope that by undertaking scientific research alongside our forestry project, we will be able to shed some light on them and improve future conservation efforts.
Our second species is Thomas’ Dwarf Lemur (Cheirogaleus thomasi). Their range is even smaller than their Southern Woolly cousin, meaning protection and enhancement of their habitat is essential if we are to prevent their extinction.
Finally, the Anosy Mouse Lemur (Microcebus tanosi). This little guy was not known to exist in the Sainte Luce Littoral Forest until revealed by SEED researchers last year. In fact, so little is know about the species that it has yet to be classified on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. This makes its protection even more important and the SEED team is going to do all we can to improve its habitat and contribute to scientific understanding of this rare mouse lemur.
We hope this has given you a little taste of what we are working towards and why we are so passionate about protecting these three special species and the highly threatened littoral forest of which they are a part!
