By Roberto Pedraza Ruiz | Head of Wildlife Areas Programme
This semester, which closes the year, has been one of routine patrols, since the rains have continued, although with a clear decrease of humidity due to the effects of autumn. We have a permanent presence in all the reserves, with a special presence in the Las Canalitas reserve, given that illegal logging activities continue in surrounding properties.
Our presence and evaluation reconnaissance in all the properties participating in the payments for CO2 capture, confirming the compliance of conditions by their owners, finding no cattle or their grazing in any of them and of course no timber extraction activities or changes in land use. We consider that we have a good relationship with all of them and work in synergy, where clear rules allow the correct management of the project, returning these spaces to wildlife. These new conservation allies increase the protected area, maintain forest cover and therefore the health of the biological corridors on which pumas and jaguars, or green macaws depend to find food and a home. Our continued presence in the field allows us to maintain the conditions for wildlife to return and remain free of anthropogenic pressure in this period in which we live, where 96% of the mammal biomass corresponds to humans, cows and pigs, and the other 4% to other mammal species, from lions to elephants to elephants, and the other 4% to other species of mammals.
It's time to prepare for the next fire season in the Spring, with protection and combat equipment, and coordination with the governmental agencies of the three levels of government.
