Protecting Wild Cat Habitat

Late winter and the arrival of spring in Mexico and the Sierra Gorda is undoubtedly the ungrateful season, because here the latitude determines that it arrives with the highest temperatures of the year and drought conditions, which bring water shortages for communities, livestock and wildlife, water stress for forests and significantly, triggers the forest fire season.

For this reason, since mid-February we activated our Valle Verde Brigade, which consists of 12 members, with extensive experience in firefighting, properly equipped and trained, who join the official brigades in the Sierra Gorda (Federal and State Government) to give prompt and sufficient attention to the fires, as we did this year in the towns of El Lobo, El Madroño and El Cañón. This has allowed us to minimize the areas affected, thanks to effective inter-institutional coordination and to have sufficient reaction force.

And while there are no active fires, our colleagues maintain 70 km of firebreaks and trails to access the most remote areas, and carry out surveillance from the tower in the Valle Verde area in the northeast of the Sierra Gorda, with a wide panorámica view.

With all this and other actions, we protect the habitat of wild cats in these mountains.

Finales de invierno y la llegada de la primavera en México y la Sierra Gorda es sin duda la estación ingrata, pues aquí la latitud determina que llegue con las temperaturas más altas del año y condiciones de sequía, que traen desabasto de agua para las comunidades, ganado y vida silvestre, stress hídrico para los bosques y muy importante, desencadena la temporada de incendios forestales.

Es por ello que activamos desde mediados de febrero a nuestra Brigada Valle Verde para el manejo y combate del fuego que consta de 12 integrantes, con amplia experiencia en el combate de incendios, debidamente equipados y capacitados, que se suman a las brigadas oficiales en la Sierra Gorda (Gobierno Federal y Estatal) para dar una atención expedita y suficiente a los incendios, como este año ya lo hicimos en incendios en las localidades de El Lobo, El Madroño y El Cañón. Ello ha permitido minimizar las superficies afectadas, gracias a una efectiva coordinación interinstitucional y contar con suficiente fuerza de reacción.

Y mientras no hay incendios activos, nuestros colegas mantienen 70 kms de brechas cortafuego y senderos para acceder a las áreas más remotas, y realizan vigilancia desde la torre con la que contamos en el área de Valle Verde al noreste de la Sierra Gorda, donde dominan a un amplio panorama.

Con todo esto y otras acciones, protegemos el hábitat de los felinos silvestres en estas montañas.
