Subj: Your support can save more life in BURUNDI
October 29, 2024, the president of the solidarity association Save Life Make difference (SALIMADI) visited eleven people who were victims of lightning where 13 people were struck on October 25, 2023, on Warubondo hill in the Gatumba zone in the Mutimbuzi commune of Bujumbura province.
These victims are hospitalized in 3 health facilities, namely 6 in the BAHO hospital, 4 in the Hippocrate hospital in KAJAGA and another in the police hospital. 2 people among the 13 struck by lightning died on the same day.
The Permanent Secretary clarified the objective of this visit which is to encourage and support them. He wished them a good recovery and a good recovery so that they can go about their daily activities.
The administrative authorities present at this visit thanked the Ministry responsible for national solidarity for this support towards these people in difficulty. They asked the Ministry to continue to help especially in the payment of bills for medical care.
It was a very intense and very brief storm, lasting about twenty minutes, which caused the disaster, according to the administrator of the commune of Nyanza-Lac, located some 155 km south of the capital Bujumbura. Lightning then struck the 7th grade class of Gasange college where dozens of students were crowded. Seven middle school students were killed on the spot and 51 others injured, explains Prudence Kabura.
On Tuesday, two people who were guarding a herd and nine cows were struck by lightning in the commune of Gisuru. And two days earlier, four people were killed and nine others were injured, again by lightning, which this time struck a Pentecostal church, in the middle of Sunday service, in this same commune in eastern Burundi.
Since these cases have multiplied, some people do not hesitate to exploit ancestral fears linked to a phenomenon considered supernatural in Burundi, especially since these storms now occur during the short dry season.
Some evangelical pastors do not hesitate to speak of divine punishment, in some regions, the population attacks supposed sorcerers. The administrator of Nyanza-Lac, for his part, calls on the Burundian government to simply install lightning rods in all schools in the country
11 people were struck by lightning on 26/10/2024 while attending a service at the Protestant church of #Buhayira. They were taken to Kaburantwa hospital, treated and "are no longer in any danger", according to the Murwi admicom (
where this church is located In addition, more than 25 houses were demolished by rain mixed with strong winds on Jerama hill in the same commune, on 27/10/2024. Crop fields, including banana plantations, were also damaged The population is asking for the intervention of benefactors
