Child Victim of Online Sexual Abuse Receives Holistic Support and Recovery
Thailand – March 2025
In March, a collaborative intervention led by the Hug Project, the TICAC Cyber Crime Investigation Division (Cyber Police), and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) was formed to assist a 9-year-old girl who had become a victim of online sexual exploitation.
The child had been sexually abused by a perpetrator who documented the incident through photos and video recordings, which were subsequently distributed via online platforms to contacts within an online gaming community. Upon being alerted to the case, the agencies involved moved swiftly to ensure the child’s safety and provide urgent medical and psychological assistance.
The victim was taken for a physical and forensic examination at a hospital to assess any signs of physical harm, evaluate her developmental stage, and conduct a psychological assessment with a child and adolescent psychiatrist. The medical report found no physical injuries, and her physical development was deemed normal for her age. However, the child’s mental state presented a more complex challenge due to her young age and confusion surrounding the traumatic experience.
Recognizing the potential harm of repeatedly recounting the event during legal proceedings, the multidisciplinary response team followed child-sensitive justice procedures. A trained psychologist conducted a forensic interview under the Criminal Procedure Code, and the session was recorded for potential use in court, thereby reducing the need for the child to relive the trauma through repeated questioning.
Despite the immediate interventions, the psychological impact remained significant. Observations during therapy sessions and medical follow-ups indicated that the child had become noticeably less cheerful and lively. Her behavior reflected emotional distress, a common outcome in cases involving trauma at such a young age.
To support the child’s recovery, the Hug Project committed to covering medical costs, transportation cost and ensuring continued psychiatric care. A long-term therapeutic plan was implemented, focusing on emotional rehabilitation tailored to the child’s developmental needs. Treatment included psychological counseling, talk therapy, behavioral monitoring, and social therapy activities aimed at rebuilding her sense of safety and emotional resilience.
Encouragingly, ongoing evaluations have revealed positive developments. The child has gradually regained her cheerful disposition, and her mother reported that she has begun engaging with her peers once again. These signs of recovery underscore the importance of comprehensive care and justice in supporting young victims of abuse.
This case highlights the critical role of a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach in addressing child sexual exploitation. Not only does it ensure that perpetrators face legal consequences, but it also provides victims with the resources and care necessary to heal and return to a sense of normalcy.
