Education: our biggest weapon against VAWG

By Rosario Hernandez | Donor Relations Manager

This quarter, our project has made significant strides in advancing educational opportunities for women and girls through a series of targeted, integrated activities. These efforts aimed to address barriers to education, promote awareness of rights and safety, and foster community engagement to create a more supportive environment for girls’ continued learning.

In terms of material support, we distributed essential school supplies to 40 students, among whom 24 were girls. This initiative helped ensure their active participation in ongoing education. Recognizing transportation as a key factor in school attendance, we provided a bicycle to one female student, facilitating easier access to her school. Additionally, families received food assistance and hygiene supplies, indirectly strengthening girls’ well-being and reducing economic barriers that might hinder their educational pursuits.

Our empowerment and awareness-raising activities played a crucial role this quarter. We conducted four sessions with a total of 19 participants, including women and girls, focusing on recognizing personal strengths, building resilience, and developing problem-solving skills. These sessions aimed to empower girls to overcome challenges and pursue their educational goals confidently.

We organized child protection awareness sessions that reached 229 participants, emphasizing the importance of child safety, rights, and the need to protect girls from violence and abuse, especially those with disabilities or special needs. These efforts helped foster a protective environment that encourages girls to stay in school and thrive.

Community engagement was a key component of our strategy. We trained 17 parents as Parent Ambassadors, equipping them to promote gender-equitable family dynamics and safe environments for children. These Parent Ambassadors actively led child protection initiatives and engaged local community leaders, thereby strengthening community support for girls’ education and safety.

To amplify our outreach, we launched digital and community-based initiatives. Youth-led Facebook Live sessions and podcasts addressed issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as well as gender norms. These digital platforms helped challenge societal taboos that often hinder girls’ access to education. Additionally, mobile awareness sessions conducted within schools directly engaged students, enhancing their understanding of health, safety, and rights issues affecting girls.

Overall, these comprehensive activities have contributed to reducing barriers faced by girls in accessing education, increasing awareness of their rights, and fostering gender-equitable family and community environments. Through these efforts, we are creating a more enabling space for girls to pursue their education, stay safe, and realize their full potential.
