Access to clean water is essential to preventing trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can lead to irreversible blindness. That is why Orbis works with local partners to install sustainable rainwater harvesting systems in schools across rural Ethiopia.
These systems collect and store rainwater, giving children access to clean water for regular hand and face washing, helping reduce the spread of trachoma and other preventable infections.
During a recent monitoring visit to Garesse Primary School, we saw the impact of this work first-hand. A newly installed water harvesting unit now provides clean water to over 2,000 children, alongside handwashing stations and improved sanitation facilities.
Beyond providing water, these investments support healthier hygiene practices, safer learning environments and long-term trachoma prevention.
