For centuries, Kisia Village in Paya Sub County did not have a permanent and clean water soruce and so people fetched water from seasonal open hand dug water wells and from streams that would dry up during dry seasons and get flooded and contaminated during rainy seasons. These exposed commuities to waternone diseases and shortage of clean water.
However, thanks you the generosity of our partner and donor Global Joy Giving and several other supporters like you, we have for the very first time drilled a community borehole providing permanent access to clean and safe water to over 1000 people. This has reduced the long distance that women and girls covered while carrying heavy water containers on the heads for miles, improved schol attendance by young boys and girls who would spend hours helping their households fetch water and missing out on going to school, improved household hygiene and reduced waterbone related illnesses that had for long affected the productivity of communities.
With community involvement, the local members of the community mobilized and carried out senstization regarding the community water project, provide land and participated in site selection and geophysical survey, provided local materials to support the drilling and construction of the borehole, installation of the pump and testing and commissioning of the borehole.
The project provided an opportunity for the team learn critical lessoons, including the fact that community involvement and ownership are crucial for the success of the project, proper site selection and geophysical survey are essential for the success of the borehole as this helps in establishing a host site with the highest water yield, borehole management committee as a crucial component in determing the usage and safety of the borehole conducting regular repair and maintenance of the borehole and pump are necessary to ensure sustainability and lastly, apacity building and training for the community on borehole management and maintenance are essential.
