Clean Water Access for 1000 People

By AGIZO JOSUE | PROJECT MANAGER

WATER

1. Project Summary

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the province of South Kivu, over 1,000 people living in rural areas lack access to safe drinking water. This situation leads to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. The project aims to build sustainable water catchment systems, rehabilitate existing water points, and raise awareness among local populations about hygiene practices.

The goal is clear: to provide 1,000 people with reliable and sustainable access to clean water, while significantly reducing the prevalence of water-related diseases.

2. The Issue

Rural communities in South Kivu face a silent health crisis: the water consumed daily often comes from contaminated and poorly maintained sources. The lack of infrastructure, awareness, and resources to maintain water points only worsens the problem. As a result, preventable diseases are spreading and endangering the health of families, especially children.

3. Project Objectives

  • Provide sustainable access to clean water for 1,000 beneficiaries.
  • Build reliable and appropriate water catchment systems.
  • Rehabilitate damaged or abandoned water points.
  • Conduct hygiene and water management education for communities.
  • Strengthen local capacities to ensure long-term sustainability.
  • Technical assessment of sites for water system installation.
  • Construction of new water points (catchment systems and community taps).
  • Rehabilitation of existing but faulty water sources.
  • Community training on hygiene, sanitation, and water system management.
  • Creation of local committees to maintain and oversee water infrastructure.
  • Significant reduction in waterborne diseases in the community.
  • Improved public health, particularly for children.
  • Time saved for women and youth who typically fetch water.
  • Establishment of a strong local culture of water management.
  • Increased community resilience to future health crises.
