Sustainable Access to Clean Water in South Kivu

By AGIZO JOSUE | CORDINATOR

Sustainable Access to Clean Water in South Kivu1. General Context

In many rural areas of South Kivu, access to clean water remains a major challenge. More than a thousand people still depend on unsafe and distant water sources that are poorly maintained. This situation exposes families to waterborne illnesses such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever, which continue to weaken already vulnerable communities.

2. Problem Statement

Most existing water points are old, damaged, or insufficient. Households collect water from rivers or open sources that are highly contaminated. The lack of reliable infrastructure and local skills in water management increases the health risks.
In this context, rural communities urgently need sustainable solutions that ensure continuous access to safe drinking water.

3. Project Objective

The project aims to build water catchment and supply systems to provide safe, clean drinking water for at least 1,000 people across several villages in South Kivu.
The main objectives are:

  • Establish durable water catchment structures.
  • Significantly reduce waterborne diseases.
  • Strengthen local skills in managing and maintaining water systems.
  • Improve the overall quality of life and health resilience of the population.

4. Total Budget

The overall cost of the project is estimated at USD 9,500.
With our partnership through GlobalGiving, we have already raised USD 37, an encouraging first step that brings us closer to our goal.
(The detailed budget is not included here to maintain clarity, but it is available upon request.)

5. Project Progress

  • The identification of trainers and participants is currently underway.
  • Initial field assessments have confirmed the urgency of intervention.
  • The official launch of the activities is scheduled for November 2025.
  • Local coordination teams and community partners are mobilized and ready for implementation.

6. Partnership with GlobalGiving

Our partnership with GlobalGiving allows us to widen our support base, strengthen the project’s transparency, and significantly increase our chances of reaching full funding.
Thanks to this collaboration, we are confident that this project will become a collective achievement supported by committed donors from around the world.

7. Expected Impact

Once completed:

  • More than 1,000 people will have access to safe, clean, and reliable water.
  • Waterborne diseases will decrease significantly.
  • Communities will be better prepared to face health crises.
  • Local skills and knowledge will ensure the sustainability of water systems.
  • Health, dignity, and quality of life will be strengthened across the villages.

8. Call to Donors

We extend a sincere appeal to all donors, partners, and friends who wish to support a concrete, vital, and high-impact humanitarian initiative.
Every contribution—no matter how small—brings a family closer to clean water.
We invite all people of goodwill to join us in this essential effort.

9. Acknowledgements

We express our deep gratitude to the first donors who have already contributed.
Your support gives hope and encourages us to pursue this mission with determination.
We also thank GlobalGiving for its continuous support and the trust placed in our work.
