In rural Nigeria, many pregnant women lack access to ultrasound scans due to cost, distance, and limited health facilities. Without scans, complications such as ectopic pregnancies, fetal distress, and multiple births often go undetected, contributing to high maternal and newborn deaths. Nigeria accounts for nearly 20% of global maternal deaths (WHO, 2023). This project will bring free ultrasound services to rural mothers, helping detect risks early and save lives.
In rural Nigeria, many women cannot afford ultrasound scans or reach facilities that provide them. Clinics are often too far, and the few available machines are limited to urban centers. As a result, pregnancies progress without monitoring, leading to undetected complications. The maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is 512 per 100,000 live births (World Bank, 2022), and newborn deaths remain high. Lack of affordable and timely ultrasound services leaves women and their babies at serious risk.
This project will deploy mobile ultrasound units to rural communities and provide scans at no cost. Trained health workers will conduct routine pregnancy scans during antenatal visits, detecting complications early. Mothers will receive referrals for higher-level care if needed. By removing financial and distance barriers, more women will have access to life-saving monitoring, creating safer pregnancies and reducing preventable deaths among both mothers and newborns.
With regular access to ultrasound, rural mothers can detect risks early, seek timely treatment, and deliver safely. This will reduce maternal and newborn deaths, while encouraging more women to attend antenatal care. Health workers will gain skills to provide continuous services, and portable machines will remain in rural clinics. Over time, communities will have stronger access to maternal health services, leading to healthier families and safer childbirth practices in underserved regions.
