When Anita contacted us earlier this summer she had been trying to escape abuse from her husband in Ireland for over a year. Her daughter Clove was being impacted by witnessing the abuse. She was afraid of her father, especially when he drank alcohol. Anita fearer if Clove grew up in a home with a violent, alcoholic father she would end up choosing the same type of man in her future. She was desperate to get Clove home.
Anita communicated with our crisis email advocate Meg almost daily for several weeks. Meg was able to provide emotional support, safety planning, logistical, legal and child custody information related to fleeing violence in a foreign country and returning home.
Anita was able to speak to an international family law attorney who advised her on the Hague Convention and how it may impact bringing Clove home.
When Anita was ready to escape, Meg helped her put the final steps into place.
Anita and Clove are finally home, away from the abuse and are safely living in a domestic violence shelter. Clove is happy playing with the other children at he shelter and Anita is getting resources in place to help them transitioninto an apartment and into a peaceful life in the USA.
Providing daily support to victims of abuse abroad like Anita and Clove would not be possible without your support.
