JUNE-SEPTEMBER PROGRESS REPORT

Project Goal

To provide free primary healthcare services to people in vulnerable communities affected by the ongoing socio-political crisis in the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon. 

Project Objectives

  1. To support two (2) CHWs in Kitta, Ekondo-Titi Health District to provide free primary healthcare services to those in need.
  2. To perform surveillance on diseases prone to outbreaks in Kitta and Tole.

 

RESULTS

In the months of June to September, community health workers in Ekondo Titi engaged over 1176 persons (includng children) in the community.  These services included the treatment of uncomplicated common infections/diseases through the provision of essential drugs, referral of complicated cases, immunization of children, proper nutrition for children <5 years, maternal health promotion and sensitization for health promotion. Further details on the activities of CHW in Ekondo-Titi are expounded in the sections below. 

  1. Provision of Healthcare services to Vulnerable Persons:  In the months of June to September, community health workers in Ekondo Titi provided primary health care services to 186 people (85 males and 101 females) of the vulnerable population in Kitta. These services included treatment of simple malaria (19 people; 9 males and 10 females), simple diarrhea (23 people: 8 males and 15 females) and simple acute respiratory tract infection (21 people: 6 males and 15 females). For maternal care, 4 newly identified pregnant women were referred to health facilities for ANC, 8 pregnant women were provided with ferrous folate, 1 pregnant woman was provided with a delivery kit and 3 births were reported in the community. 
  2. Sensitisation for Health promotion: The CHWs mobilized and engaged over 990 members of host communities in health educative talks for health promotion during home visits and community gatherings. The most attended educational talk sessions were on handwashing (327 people), water purification and preservation (340 persons)  and diarrhea prevention (324 persons).
  3. Screening of Children <5 years for Severe Acute Malnutrition: The CHWs in Ekodo-titi screened 62 children (Figure 2) < 5 years  were screened for  severe acute malnutrition (SAM) using a MUAC tape. One male was diagnosed with SAM with complications and was immediately referred to the district Hospital for treatment and 6 caregivers were sensitized on appropriate feeding for children <5 years
