Project Report | Oct 30, 2023
Promoting Continuity in Adolescent Education

By Monica Sanchez | CEO

In Nuevo León, there are two factors contributing to a 60% school dropout rate among adolescents. The first is the academic factor, and the second is the economic factor.

For this reason, since 2017, we have been promoting the program of coaching for high school entrance exams. However, in 2023, we launched the first edition of the project with a comprehensive approach. In addition to providing academic coaching, we offered career guidance and support for applying to scholarship opportunities.

Two hundred adolescents participated in this project, with 51% being female and 49% male, demonstrating a balanced gender participation.

The project also involves parents, enabling clear communication with the participants and their families, providing detailed information about the project and the expectations to be met. This laid the foundation for effective collaboration between the coordinating team, parents, and adolescents, fostering a culture of participation and commitment from the project's inception.

With this strong foundation, the project could initiate its activities, focusing on the holistic development of adolescents, addressing both academic and emotional aspects. Diagnostic exams provided valuable information to tailor interventions and provide necessary support to each participant, considering their specific needs.

The project achieved remarkable results, with 100% of participants passing the high school entrance exam. Of all the participants, 62 adolescents selected a UANL high school as their first choice, and they all obtained the required scores to enroll in their chosen school, which is a significant achievement. It is important to note that, due to some families' economic conditions, the remaining participants opted for more cost-effective options such as CBETIS, Emiliano Zapata High School, and CETIS.

However, some limitations were identified concerning the capacity of the educational institution, affecting four adolescents who couldn't enroll in their selected high school and were redirected to CETIS. It is worth mentioning that one student achieved an outstanding score, allowing her to be directed to the UANL Center for Bilingual Education and Research (CIDEB), representing a remarkable educational opportunity.

Furthermore, six other adolescents managed to enroll in the Technical Medical High School, providing them with a specialized option in the medical field and opening doors for their future professional development in this field.

These results reflect the success of the project in supporting adolescents in the high school selection process, ensuring that the vast majority of them enter educational institutions aligned with their interests and goals. Additionally, it provided us with concrete data highlighting the limitations of some educational institutions, emphasizing the need to improve the state's educational infrastructure.

Collectively, these results confirm that the project has been effective in aiding adolescents in their high school selection, guaranteeing access to institutions that align with their educational interests and goals while promoting equitable and comprehensive education.
