A Second Chance for Gul Hassan

By Hareem Baig | Senior Executive - Marketing

For fifty-two-year-old Gul Hassan Sarwan, life is defined by the rhythm of the Arabian Sea. As a fisherman from the remote village of Haji Allah Dino Mandro, his livelihood requires him to spend weeks at a time away from land, working tirelessly to support his family. In the demanding environment of a fishing boat, minor injuries are common, but for someone living in extreme poverty, a small wound can quickly become a threat to their entire way of life.

During a recent trip to sea, Gul Hassan sustained a puncture wound to his foot while handling his catch. With no medical facilities available on the boat and a family depending on his income, he had no choice but to push through the pain. As the days passed, the wound deepened and his foot began to swell. By the time he returned to shore, the infection had progressed so severely that the simple act of walking, and the prospect of ever returning to his boat, seemed impossible. The physical pain was matched only by the mental stress of knowing that if he couldn't work, his family wouldn't eat.

Hope arrived when a relative told him about the SHINE Humanity Clinic in Sujawal. Traveling from Shah Bander, Gul Hassan arrived at the clinic seeking help for his foot, but he soon discovered that his health challenges ran deeper than an infection. Through assessment, it was discovered that Gul Hassan’s blood sugar was dangerously high at 400 mg/dl. For the first time in his life, Gul Hassan learned he was living with Diabetes Mellitus - the underlying reason why his wound refused to heal.

The team at the Clinic didn’t just treat the infection; they stepped in to manage his overall well-being. Alongside regular professional wound dressings, Gul Hassan received comprehensive counseling on managing diabetes, lifestyle changes, and the importance of medication. For a man who had spent his life navigating the unpredictable sea, this guidance provided a new kind of map - one that led toward long-term health.

Today, the transformation is visible. Through consistent follow-up care, Gul Hassan’s blood sugar has stabilized, and his foot wound has significantly healed. He is no longer burdened by the constant pain and the fear of disability. Expressing his gratitude, Gul Hassan shared that SHINE Humanity did more than just treat a wound; they gave him a second chance to lead a healthy life and return to the sea he loves.
