Dear Supporters,
It is well known that COVID-19 moved from animals to humans. And it is further discussed that society must start preparing for a world where pandemics are more common and frequent. So why is that and how is it connected to small businesses?
Humans are taking up more and more space on this planet. What we eat and the product we consume is one of the key reasons why animals are living and getting closer to communities. It forces them to seek food and shelter in places other than their natural habitat. This makes it easier for viruses to develop and move from animals and humans, causing pandemics. Whilst the virus has killed hundreds and thousands of people around the world, it has forced businesses to close, and has left even more people without an income.
So now as countries are opening up, societies are trying to get back to normal. We must continue to support small businesses and make it possible for them to survive, grow and employ. But we cannot continue to do it the way we always have. We need to think differently. Not simply to ensure that businesses will survive another pandemic and lockdown period, but that they are reducing pressure on mother earth and making it possible for animals to return to their habitat. The GVI Trust is therefore going to encourage and help entrepreneurs across Africa to start businesses through micro-loans with a special focus on those who are using a green, environmentally friendly focus. May it be through sewing using organic cotton, to vegan baking ventures or locally produced peanut butter businesses, a donation would not only provide the starting-capital and training needed but would bring confidence that someone is believing in them.
It has taken us too long to see the connection that our actions have to the environment, and how it is linked to the health of society. We have all been affected by COVID-19 in one way or another, some to a greater extent. Nevertheless, it is not too late to take action. It is not too late to ensure that businesses take their responsibility of acting ethically, or even better, use their innovative minds to find solutions. Together we can help people with green ideas to go to market, grow their businesses, employ more people and reduce the risk of new pandemics.
Thank you!
With Gratitude,
Africa Micro Loans
