Dear Supporters,
Our project continues to be blessed with good fortune thanks to your continued support. One such example was a spring visit by the Intel Education Service Corps (IESC). Intel Corporation selects high achieving employees to be part of this elite volunteer service corps and we would agree that they are the best of the best. In preparation for IESC’s visit to Haiti, students from our Palmyra-Haiti Technology Project conducted a Skype interview of one of the IESC team members. Our Palmyra students had many good questions and IESC provided insightful answers and further inspired our students to continue their own service work to Haiti.
Once on the ground in Haiti, the IESC worked at an intense pace. In the span of a week, they worked diligently to make significant improvements on the technology infrastructure of our schools and to conduct extensive student and teacher technology trainings. Here is a brief summary of some of what the Intel crew accomplished:
• Serviced 50 of our laptops
• Installed 23 software applications
• Created lab number & inventory system
• Trained librarian on Excel & created log file to manage books inventory
• Conducted over 15 hours of training with 43 teachers (PC Basic, Introduction to Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Educational Software)
• Developed Math based lesson plan & held first 2 math classes in computer lab
• Inspired students and educators alike in Palmyra and Haiti!
One of the highlights of the week was a combined Skype session between the students at the Palmyra Middle School and the students, staff and IESC crew at James Stine College in St. Marc. Students on both sides of the Skype session had prepared questions for each other and the IESC team. It was inspirational and a foreshadowing of more online collaborations to come in the future.
The IESC team also provided us with a report of strengths and needs of the technology infrastructure at our schools. As in most developing countries, consistent and reliable Internet connectivity can be challenging and that continues to be an ongoing need.
