Energized by Student Success and Promise

By Helen Remington | Technology Advisor

Class of 2016
Class of 2016

Dear Friends,

As schools in Palmyra and Haiti prepare to begin a new year of education, we are energized by the successes achieved and the promise of growth of our students through opportunities in digital learning.

Jame Stine’s College celebrated the Class of 2016’s Graduation on July 17, 2016. Out of the thirty-nine young men and women who graduated, six began their education in Kindergarten at the Les Bons Samaritains School. These graduates have benefited by the technology, support, and collaboration our project has provided throughout their years of schooling. It has always been the vision of the school’s founder, Dr. Rodrigue Mortel, that through education, caring leaders will be formed with the capacity and desire to lead and serve others. (As we have shared in the past, Dr. Mortel himself was born into abject poverty in Haiti, but through determination, hard work, and sacrifice was able to persevere through unimaginable obstacles to become a world-renowned physician and philanthropist.)  We are so proud of these thirty-nine graduates and are excited to hear of their future accomplishments!

Over the summer, our Palmyra students continued to conduct audio interviews that are published on our Project Facebook Page. One interview was with John Sheehan who is a producer of National Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and the creator and producer of the podcast: The Radio Adventures of Eleanor Amplified; both from WHYY in Philadelphia. (See the link below to check out John Sheehan’s cool Eleanor Amplified Adventures). Other summer interviews were with Frank Ryan, a retired U.S. Marine Reserve Colonel who has done relief work to help the people of Haiti and our own Wally Popejoy, principal of Palmyra Area Middle School. (We are grateful to Tim Lambert, of WITF, who instructed our wiki team last fall in the elements of creating effective audio interviews.)

As the school year begins, our students, in Palmyra and Haiti, bring an eagerness and joy to the work they accomplish. This fall, our Wiki Club Members are looking forward to connecting with our peers in Haiti, conducting more audio interviews, and raising funds to continue to sponsor Carl’s second year of Preschool at the newly formed preschool in Saint Marc, Haiti. Arcerneau, our project leader in Haiti, will continue facilitating communications with students in Haiti and posting our projects progress on our project wiki, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We also have several speaking opportunities on the calendar that will enable us to share the good work being accomplished by our project and raise awareness of the challenges overcome and accomplishments achieved by the children in Haiti.

On September 21st, GlobalGiving’s will have a Time-Release Bonus Day where funds donated to our project at 06:00:01 am EDT and 12:00:01 pm EDT will be matched. We appreciate the opportunities that  GlobalGiving provides to multiply the good being accomplished for our students in Haiti!

Thank you for your support and best wishes for an energized Fall!!
