Renewed Beginnings

By Jeff Remington | Project Leader

Thankful Palmyra Students
Thankful Palmyra Students

Dear Friends,

Another school year has ended and we reflect back on accomplishments from this year and look forward to some new beginnings for next year.  Our peers in Haiti continue to thrive with the technology that you have helped provide for them. The St. Marc region is exploring the facilitation of post secondary schools and our technology presence may play a part in the future educational opportunities for that endeavor.  Acerneau, our student project leader in Haiti, has been so influenced by technology that he has started his own business.  We will share more about his entrepreneurship in a future update.

Our Palmyra students have had fundraisers to sponsor our preschooler Carl for another year. Our Palmyra students continued to raise public awareness of the digital divide that exists between developed and underdeveloped countries like Haiti.  They have done this through a seminar presentation at a local college, a presentation for the public in our school district, and through podcast interviews of interesting people on our SoundCloud page.  You may hear the interviews at our link in this report.  In addition, Palmyra School District staff members have donated over $1,000 toward our project this year.

Our most exciting news is our project’s expansion next year to include our district’s elementary division and some high school connections.  Six Palmyra elementary staff members will be joining our project in facilitation roles to connect our project and our students in Haiti to Palmyra’s elementary population.  In the picture included with this report are (L to R) Amber, Charla, Leanne, Jill,  Alyssa, Ariana.  These amazing Palmyra staff members have a big heart for making connections between students of different cultures.  Some preliminary plans for next year include having our Palmyra secondary students raise awareness of Haiti with our elementary students, explore collaboration opportunities at the elementary level, and to look for new fundraising opportunities for our project.

If you have not recently contributed to our project, we encourage you to do so.  Any donation makes an impact and keeps this unique project going.  If you have not had the opportunity to “Like” our project on Facebook we would encourage you to consider that and share our project with a friend or family member.  Your ongoing support has been and continues to be a blessing for so many.  You foster compassion, hope, and make the world a bit brighter with your support.
