Shelter and Hope for Displaced Families

By JOSUE AGIZO | COORDINATOR

1. Context and Rationale

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, ongoing armed conflicts in North and South Kivu continue to force thousands of families from their homes. Today, more than 21,000 people are living in extremely precarious conditions, without adequate shelter, exposed to harsh weather, disease, and insecurity. Women, children, and the elderly are the most affected.

In response to this humanitarian emergency, our organization has launched a project to provide emergency shelter tents, addressing a fundamental need: protection and dignity.

2. Project Objective

The main objective is to distribute 3,000 emergency shelter tents to displaced families living in camps across North and South Kivu. Each tent can accommodate up to 7 people, providing safe shelter for approximately 21,000 beneficiaries.

3. Project Activities

  • Identification of the most vulnerable beneficiaries in collaboration with community leaders
  • Procurement and transportation of durable, weather-resistant tents
  • Fair and transparent distribution within displacement camps
  • Post-distribution monitoring to assess impact and identify additional needs

In parallel, a vocational training component is being prepared. It aims to empower young girls by equipping them with income-generating skills. This program is currently in the phase of identifying trainers and beneficiaries, with implementation scheduled for November 2025.

4. Expected Results

  • 21,000 people will gain access to safe shelter
  • Reduced health risks related to exposure
  • Improved physical and mental well-being
  • Strengthened community resilience
  • Progressive empowerment of young girls through vocational training

5. Project Budget

The total project budget is estimated at $95,600 USD. To date, $100 USD has already been raised through our partnership with GlobalGiving.

Although this amount is still modest, it represents a promising start. We are confident that, with this collaboration and the support of donors, we will reach our goal.

6. Project Status

  • Active partnership with GlobalGiving
  • Initial fundraising underway
  • Preparatory phase ongoing (beneficiary and trainer identification)
  • Project launch scheduled for November 2025

7. Project Impact

This project goes far beyond providing shelter. It restores hope to thousands of families. By offering a safe place to live, it allows parents to focus on rebuilding their lives, children to regain a sense of normalcy, and young girls to envision a better future.

The impact will be long-lasting: improved living conditions, reduced vulnerability, and stronger community cohesion.

8. Call to Donors

We make a sincere appeal to individuals, organizations, and partners: your support is essential. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings a family closer to safety and dignity.

Together, we can make a real difference.

9. Acknowledgements

We express our deep gratitude to all donors who have already contributed to this initiative. Your generosity brings hope to thousands of people in need.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our partner GlobalGiving for their valuable support.

Conclusion
This project is a concrete response to an urgent crisis. With your support, we can transform lives, restore dignity, and build a more stable future for displaced communities in the Kivu region.
